Josephine Press is pleased to present Nocturnes by Stas Orlovski. Nocturnes is a suite of 5 etchings with chiné colle, incased in a hand made screenprinted folio with colophon page. The prints were made in collaboration with John Greco, master printer at Josephine Press, with all steps over seen by the artist. Josephine Press published Nocturnes in collaboration with artist Stas Orlovski, completing in January of 2015.
Long fascinated by sources such as the Soviet-era children’s books from his own childhood, Japanese woodblock prints and Victorian illustration, Orlovski has mined this vocabulary of images, ideas and themes for his drawings, collages, paintings and most recently projected stop-motion animated installations. For Nocturnes—using a moonbeam as the central motif—Orlovski creates a suite of prints where disparate histories, events and dreams collide. Over the course of 5 compositions, a moon moves across the night sky illuminating a cultural mash-up of figures, textile patterns, plants, disembodied eyes, rainstorms and waves. These illuminated fragments function as psychological projections, suggesting apparitions and evoking memories. The resulting images and interactions, are the artist’s exploration of the bittersweet, the quaint, the melancholy and the picturesque.
Stas Orlovski is an internationally renowned artist based in Los Angeles, CA, born in Kishinev, Moldova in 1969. Orlovski studied art in Toronto and Los Angeles, receiving a BFA from York University, a B.Ed from the University of Toronto and an MFA from the University of Southern California. Orlovski has exhibited widely throughout the U.S. with solo shows in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and San Francisco. His work has been included in museum exhibitions at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Pomona College Museum of Art, Long Beach Museum of Art, Pasadena Museum of California Art, Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, Weatherspoon Museum of Art, Arkansas Art Center and the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco among others.
