Moku Hanga
Taught by Joseph Vorgity

The artist Joseph Vorgity will be teaching a 2 day workshop on mokuhanga, traditional Japanese woodcut. Students will learn proper carving techniques, maintenance of carving tools, inking the wood using waterbased inks and brushes, printing a multi-color woodcut using a baren, and the kento registration system. Students will learn reduction style woodcutting, printing multiple colors using only one block.  This is a printmaking process that can is done without a press, entirely by hand, so once you learn this technique you can easily make moku hanga style woodcuts in your home studio!
This workshop is non-toxic!

Schedule:
Saturday, May 27th, 9am-5pm
Sunday, May 28th, 9am-5pm

Cost: $250 per student and covers all materials.
8 students maximum, 4 students minimum.

Refunds, minus $40 cancellation fee, are available up to 7 days prior to the workshop's start.

About the Artist
Joseph Vorgity is a contemporary realist watercolorist and printmaker. His still life, landscape, and figurative subject matter are recognized by strong flat areas of color with sharp lines to delineate shapes. Some themes are narrative, others have a surreal quality while many are created primarily for their beauty and visual impact.  Some of the figurative pieces are modeled after traditional religious pictures of saints and deities while others are related to figures in Japanese woodblock prints of the early 20th century. His strongest influences come from the American Precisionist Movement, the Arts and Craft Movement, and from Japonisme. Vorgity maintains a studio in Los Angeles and is a member of the Los Angeles Printmaking Society. Joseph is also the proprietor of Hyacinth Press which produces woodblock printed greeting cards.
